Seminar to celebrate the International Day of Forests

The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in partnership with the South African National Biodiversity Institute, Food & Trees for Africa and other role-players will host a seminar on the International Day of Forests under the theme “Forests and Sustainable Cities”.

The seminar is held to focus on highlighting the key role of forests in our society as well as to encourage public participation in forestry related initiatives such as greening. The day will also be used as a tool to raise awareness on the dynamic relationship between forests and development which culminates in the creation of sustainable cities. Two trees will be planted on the day of the seminar.

The department will make more trees available to schools, RDP housing areas and civil society groups around Gauteng in partnership with municipalities and the Department of Basic Education.

Food and Trees for Africa launched a food forest in partnership with the department as a build-up event in honour of the day. A total of 30 plants comprising of fruit and indigenous trees were planted at the Letsema Ilima Primary School in Evaton, south of Johannesburg. About 950 trees were also distributed to agriculture cooperatives and civil society groups.
