Free State Human Settlements and Water and Sanitation host a Media Tour to Hillside View Housing Project, 29 Oct

Human Settlements is about a foundation to life. With human settlements development much more is achieved to ensure sustainability and improved quality of household life. Government strives to ensure that with all settlements there are basic services: water, sanitation and electricity. Hillside View is one such project.

The projects is a multi-housing project with Land Restitution and Military Veterans as well as Social Housing, a rental accommodation intended for low-income market. Adjacent to Hillside View BNG houses are bonded houses.

The event includes the launch of a greening programme with food security and environmental sustainability in mind. The long term vision of this is to create a green and leafy suburb in the middle of the township. Our settlements thus far have been lean on greenery; and this is meant to bring about the beginning of change and a new culture of planting trees, and growing our own food. This is a government wide growing partnership that includes services of various departments such as Agriculture and Rural Development, Fisheries and Forestry and anticipates that more departments that have common goals to this end would be approached for partnership.

Trees will also serve the purpose to combat global warming and protect the environment. In the long term this household gardens project will contribute towards poverty alleviation and reduce household expenditure on food. The long term vision of this initiative is to create a community garden that will be established into a cooperative for income generation.

Above all, through these gardens and the community garden in a long term, we aim to achive a community spirit with the Letsema approach to gardening and working together where more can be achieve through joint effort. When this is achived, we will have achieved building a community of Hillside View from multi-cultural backgrounds and cultures.

In addition to the launch of the gardens, we will have a media tour to the Hillside View Integrated Human Settlements Project, visiting the different human settlemnents programmes from Land Restitution, Military Veterans, BNG Houses and Social Housing. The tour will also include a visit to the Water Pipeline site that is managed by Bloemwater. This 33.8km pipeline will address some of our water challenges in recent years. This new pipeline replaces the old pipeline that had passed its service life.

Join us to see first hand, government integrated work through our various projects and government departments.
