Home Affairs committee to hold meeting with stakeholders on Cape Town refugees’ matter

The Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs will tomorrow hold a multi-stakeholder meeting to discuss the impasse with refugees in Cape Town. The meeting is held to find a final solution to the matter, as it has been going on for a long time without a way forward.

“We continue to reiterate that refugees are bound by the prescripts of South Africa’s law and by-laws and must at all times adhere to these laws. It is unacceptable that refugees show distain for the rule of law, to a point of challenging the authority of the police, like we saw last week,” said Advocate Bongani Bongo, the Chairperson of the Committee.

The committee has invited the Department of Home Affairs, the City of Cape Town, the Provincial Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure, the South African Human Rights Commission and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) with aim of finding lasting solution to the matter.
