Government activities for the week, 11 to 17 Mar

Government has scheduled the following briefings/activities for the week: 11 – 17 March 2019. The activities, which are aligned to the National Development Plan and outlined in the Medium Term Strategic Framework 2014-2019, are undertaken to build a better South Africa.

The Minister for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Dr Zweli Mkhize, will on Monday, 11 March, address the South African Local Government Association’s Research Colloquium. The colloquium will be held at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, Durban at 08h30, under the theme: “Addressing Inequality through Inclusive, Sustainable & Viable Local Governments – Whose Role is it Anyway”

The Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Ms Fatima Chohan, will travel to Vredendal on the West Coast on Monday, 11 March, to hand over a range of Identity and other documents to residents of Wupperthal. Before the handover programme, the Deputy Minister will meet with various community stakeholders in the morning to engage on challenges facing the community, especially those that fall within the scope of the Department of Home Affairs.

From 11 to 22 March, Minister in the Presidency responsible for Women, Ms Bathabile Dlamini, will lead government and civil society delegations to New York for the 63rd Commission on the Status of Women (CSW63). The Minister will present the country’s report on the status of social protection system access to public service sustainable infrastructure for gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls in South Africa during the CSW63.

President Cyril Ramaphosa will travel to Harare, Zimbabwe, to Co-Chair the Third Session of the Bi-National Commission (BNC) with his counterpart, President Emmerson Mnangagwa of the Republic of Zimbabwe.  The BNC is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, 12 March. During the BNC, the two Heads of State will review the bilateral cooperation between the two countries as well as review progress made with the implementation of bilateral Agreements.

The Minister of Basic Education, Ms Angie Motshekga, will on Tuesday,12 March, hand over more than 40 toilets to Ubuhle-Bemvelo Primary School, St Lucia Road Khula Village in Mtubatuba, KZN. The new facilities are part of the roll out of Sanitation Appropriate for Education Initiative launched by President Ramaphosa in August 2018.

On Tuesday, 12 March, the Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training, Mr Buti Manamela, will give the opening address at the Skills Development Summit 2019 at CSIR in Pretoria.

The Deputy Minister of Communications, Ms Pinky Kekana, will on Wednesday, 13 March, moderate a panel discussion on the AU women’s strategy on Gender Equality & Women Empowerment.

The Department of Labour will on Wednesday, 13 March, host a breakfast session with North West stakeholders aimed at establishing and strengthening partnerships with provincial employers and other organisations.  The event will take place at Rio Casino & Convention Centre in Klerksdorp at 08h30.

The 2019 South African Business Premier Awards will celebrate 25 years of notable strides made in different sectors of the economy by recognising businesspeople who have contributed to the growth of the South African economy. The prestigious event will take place at the Sandton Convention Centre on Wednesday, 13 March  The Awards are presented by the Department of Trade and Industry, Proudly South African and Brand South Africa.

On Friday, 15 March, the Department of Tourism will host a Research Seminar at the Southern Sun in Arcadia, Pretoria at 08h00. The Seminar will be held under the theme: “Advancing Tourism Growth and Development through Research”.
