Gauteng Public Transport and Roads Infrastructure on first Provincial Taxi Monitoring Committee meeting

Gauteng Provincial Taxi Monitoring Committee holds its first meeting

Gauteng MEC for Public Transport and Roads Infrastructure, Jacob Mamabolo, today convened the first Gauteng Provincial Taxi Monitoring Committee (GPTMC), which will be monitoring the implementation of resolutions agreed upon at last month’s provincial taxi summit.

The GPTMC, which is convened by MEC Mamabolo in conjunction with the Provincial Executive Committees of both the Gauteng National Taxi Alliance (GNTA) and the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO), will sit on a monthly basis.

“We agreed with both GNTA and SANTACO that government alone cannot be blamed for failure to implement resolutions as has been the case in the past. I’m encouraged that the leadership had the foresight and vision during the taxi summit that we should have a working committee that meets regularly to ensure that the summit was not just a talk show, but that there are tangible outcomes that emanate from the discussions we had,” said Mamabolo.

Held in Sedibeng on the 24th and 25th of July 2019, the Gauteng Summit agreed that provincial government working with the taxi industry should commit to modernising the industry through technology and ensuring peace and stability in the industry so that the sector contributes more towards growing of the Gauteng economy. It also agreed that unity among the industry players would make it easier for the minibus taxi industry to participate in a meaningful way in the whole transport value chain.

“We believe that today’s meeting is but a step in the right direction and spells the beginning of a new period of growth and stability in the taxi industry, which transports a majority of our people,” added MEC Mamabolo.
