Gauteng Legislature hosts Sector Parliament for Senior Citizens, 19 Oct

Themed “Making your future work better. Learning from Madiba” this year’s Sector Parliament for Senior Citizens hosted by the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL), will provide a platform for senior citizens of Gauteng to directly engage with both the GPL and the Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) on various service delivery and social empowerment issues affecting them.

The Sector Parliament further aims to empower Senior Citizens to have a say in matters of governance as stipulated in the Older Persons Act (Act 13 of 2006).  It is also an opportunity to embrace the Senior Citizens’ role in all political, social, economic and cultural discourse of society.

Topics for debate during the Sector Parliament are:

  • Giving priority to older persons and ensuring enabling and supportive environment with reference to Older Persons Act, 2006 / Older Persons Act mandates all spheres of Government to render services to older persons. Which other Departments / services you lack the most?
  • Access to Government Services (Health services, Housing, Justice, Social security, SASSA)
  • Older Persons, Poverty and Food Security / In line with the proposed land expropriation, do you think older persons still have a role to play should land be expropriated?
  • Older Person’s Volunteerism and participation in the economy (Informal traders and domestic workers)


The Senior Citizens’ Parliament is scheduled to convene as follows:

The GPL has invited Members of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (MPLs); Gauteng Premier David Makhura; Speaker of the City of Tshwane; South African Older Persons Forum; South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC); Care givers to older people; Previous Senior Citizens Parliaments participants; and Veterans leagues from political parties to participate.

The GPL remains committed to its Constitutional mandates of oversight, law-making and public participation; and implement programmes that actively seek to improve the quality of life for the people of Gauteng.
