Gauteng Legislature's Standing Committee on Petitions tackles service delivery issues, 29 Mar

Led by Chairperson, Honourable Ezra Letsoalo, the Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s (GPL) Standing Committee on Petitions will convene a two-day public hybrid hearing at the Eco Thaba Hotel on 29 and 30 March 2021 to address service delivery concerns raised by various communities through petitions.

It is important for communities in Gauteng to know their right to petition the Gauteng Provincial Government and Gauteng municipalities, and are thus entitled to be listened to and have their grievances attended to. The right to petition is given and protected in Sections 17, 115, 118, and 195 of the country’s Constitution, and the Gauteng Petitions Act (5 of 2002). It is against this background that the GPL will hold a petitions hearing, wherein petitioners will have an opportunity to directly engage with the Provincial Government and the Petitions Standing Committee regarding to their petitions.

Petitions to be heard on Monday, 29 March include unsavory patient services and building of a formal structure at the Vlakfontein clinic, Lenasia; encroachment of land and misallocation of an RDP home in Alexandra and; issuing of title deeds and allocation of RDP houses in Sebokeng.

On Tuesday, 30 March, the committee will deal with matters arising from the recent taxi inquiry report by the department of Roads and Transport on continuing issues of illegal operations of a taxi association in New Eersterus, Taxi conflicts in Zonkizizwe, Pretoria, Kopanong and Johannesburg and unfair elections & illegal taxi operations in the Greater Krugersdorp Taxi Association.

The Petitions public hearings will be live on the Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s YouTube page (link: http://gpl.gov.za/petitions-hearings-20210329/ )
Time: 28 March from 09h30 and 29 March from 09h00.
