Community Safety Committee to host roundtable discussion on the effectiveness of the Integrated Criminal Justice System

The Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Community Safety chaired by Honourable Sochayile Khanyile, will on Thursday, 9 November 2017 host a roundtable discussion on the effectiveness of the Integrated Criminal Justice System in Gauteng.

In 2012 the Gauteng Department of Community Safety established the Criminal Justice System Coordinating Committee (CJSCC) charged with the responsibility of improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the criminal justice process in Gauteng to increasing the probability of successful investigation, prosecution, punishment and ultimately the rehabilitation of offenders and their restoration back into society.

The CJSCC consists of the following Law Enforcement Agencies:

  • National Prosecuting Authority (NPA),
  • South African Police Service (SAPS),
  • Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), and
  • State Security Agency (SSA).

The Portfolio Committee on Community Safety has a constitutional mandate of providing oversight on the work of the Gauteng Department of Community Safety and other Law Enforcement Agencies in the Province.

The Committee has made some observations in relation to the work of the CJSCC and took a decision to conduct a Focus Intervention Study (FIS) on the effectiveness of the Integrated Criminal Justice System approach.  This FIS will be conducted in a form of a roundtable discussion and aims to achieve the following:

  • To establish possible contributions and clearly defined roles of a coordinated criminal justice system in the fight against crime and achieving a safer Gauteng;
  • To evaluate the challenges and  achievements of the CJSCC since its inception by the GDCS in 2012, and how these could be strengthened;
  • To assess the challenges experienced by the CJSCC since its establishment by the GDCS in 2012 and how these could be overcome
  • To assess the impact of the targets set by the GDCS on the effectiveness of the CJSCC for the current financial year; and
  • To make recommendations where necessary on how to improve the effectiveness of the Provincial CJSCC in order to realise a safer Gauteng.

Members of the media are invited to cover the roundtable discussion.
