Free State Economic, Small Business Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs encourages youth employment, 18 Dec

Free State enterprises to support unemployed youth

The runaway high unemployment rate among young people continues to frustrate government fight against triple challenge of poverty, unemployment and inequality. This situation is aggravated by business insistence or experience before they could consider young people for employment.

Responding to this challenge, the government announced Youth Employment Service (YES) aimed at encouraging the business sector to provide qualifying youth with paid work experience. Sadly the private sector has not come to the party in this regard.

MEC for Department of Economic, Small Business, Tourism and Environmental Affairs Makalo Mohale come up with a home grown solution to this problem. He turned to all Free State enterprises assisted by the department to plough back into their communities. These enterprises who benefited from DESTEA Enterprise Development Programme were challenged to place one unemployed youth for work experience for at least twelve months. Each enterprise scanned the environment in their own area of operation for young people with requisite set of skills.

Sixty (60) young people with skills in electronics, accounting, food and waste sectors among others, have been identified and will be announced at the function to be hosted by Premier of the Free State Honorable Sisi Ntombela.

In the true spirit of coorporative governance, Standard Bank came to the party and offered to pay these youth a stipend of R3500.00 for the next twelve months.
