Western Cape open Government First Thursday event in Stellenbosch, 5 Mar

First Thursday to be held in Stellenbosch for the first time

The Western Cape Open Government First Thursday event will be going on the road for March- with the first outside event to be held in Stellenbosch on 5 March.

The event will be held at Rietenbosch Primary School in Cloetesville.

For those who can't make it to Cloetesville, the Cape Town CBD event will still go ahead in its usual venue at 7 Wale Street, with the various departmental desks staffed by senior government officials.

Premier Alan Winde said: "Open Government First Thursday has always been about making this government more accessible to the people it serves. That is why for this month, we have decided to make it more accessible to people outside of the Cape Town CBD and will be heading to Cloetesville in Stellenbosh."

Premier Winde and his cabinet will be available for meetings with members of the public on the evening in Stellenbosch.

Premier Winde said: "My cabinet and I are very excited to meet the people of Stellenbosch  and the surrounding areas. Open Government First Thursday is about giving the residents of the Western Cape a platform to be heard- whether they want to pitch an idea, or raise issues that they are encountering. It gives us as government leaders an opportunity to meet people face to face, and helps us to understand their needs and aspirations. It is also a fantastic networking opportunity so I encourage everyone who can make it to come along."

This is how Open Government First Thursday works:

First Thursday was originally introduced to Cape Town in 2012 as an evening for galleries and social venues like restaurants to stay open later, on the First Thursday of every month.

Open Government First Thursday is an initiative by Premier Alan Winde to allow residents to meet with members of the provincial cabinet and other government officials.

It runs from 5pm until 9pm and is open to everyone. There is no need to RSVP.

This month, the event will be operated in two venues.

Members of the public can come along to either the Wale Street or the Cloetesville venue.

They will register their details and indicate which Minister or Department they wish to meet with. They will be given a number, and entered into a queuing system. Once the number is called, they will have an opportunity to meet with the person or department. Meetings are kept brief in order to accommodate as many people as possible.

Members of the media are invited to attend.
