Employment and Labour in North West wraps up Youth Month commemoration

Department of Employment and Labour in the North West Province wrap-up youth month commemoration with a series of career exhibitions

Over 700 youth and work seekers braved the cold winter weather and attended a series of career exhibitions held in different areas around Dr Kenneth Kaunda and Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipalities which were organised by the Public Employment Services (PES) unit of the Department of Employment and Labour in the North West.

These career exhibitions were part of the youth month commemorations aimed at enabling youth and work seekers in general to meet with potential employers and to expand their networks; and also gain valuable insight about different career opportunities.

According to the PES Director in the North West Slindile Nkiwane, the youth are the asset that should be protected and nurtured so as to develop a better and well informed cohort of future adults who will be able to take the economy of the country to greater heights.

“A high turnout of youth and work seekers attending events such as these should not be celebrated as it confirms a high number of unemployment that the country is facing. However, it is also encouraging to see that the work seekers, especially the youth are determined to stand up and seek information that will turn their lives around,” said Nkiwane.

These exhibitions started on the 21/06/2022 in Morokweng near Vruburg and have since been to, Kgomotso in Taung, Amalia in Christiana, Matlosana (Klerkdorp) and ending in Tswelelang near Wolmaransstad today.

Different institutions of higher learning and funders such as Universities, Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges, NSFAS and; Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETA), South African National Defence Force, mining houses and Municipalities were invited to impart information that would assist youth and work seekers to broaden their horizons and consider other opportunities.

The Public Employment Services (PES) unit is one of the units within the Department of Employment and Labour and its mandate is to contribute to employment creation by creating enabling platforms in partnerships with private and public sectors.
