Employment and Labour launches road freight and logistics industry mega blitz inspections, 22 Nov

A month after the destructive protests by truck owners and drivers alleging that foreign nationals take their work opportunities and calling for strict regulations and transformation in the Road Freight and Logistics Industry, Employment and Labour Department will lead mega blitz inspections on the week of the 22-26 November 2021 in Gqeberha.

The inspection will bring together law enforcers such as the Department’s Inspection and Enforcement Services, Migration Officers from Department of Home Affairs, South African Police Services (SAPS) and the National Bargaining Council for Road Freight and Logistics Industry (NBCRFLI) to address non-compliance in the Road Freight Sector.

A launch which details the purpose of the blitz inspection will pave way to mega blitz inspections led by the Inspector General, Ms Aggy Moiloa where she will outline the importance of compliance with applicable legislation in the sector.

Ministers TW Nxesi and Fikile Mbalula met aggrieved truck drivers earlier in the month of October 2021 in Middleburg, Eastern Cape. Commitments were made amongst which was regular inspections to be conducted in the Road Freight industry checking compliance with applicable legislation and dealing with undocumented foreign nationals including those who arrive in the country as visitors but end up taking employment.

The Department of Employment and Labour’s has a responsibility is to ensure compliance with the National Minimum Wage Act (NMWA); Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA); Employment Equity Act (EEA), Unemployment Insurance Act (UIA); Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act (COIDA) and registration of truck drivers on Employment Services of South Africa (ESSA) database. 

On the other hand, the Department of Home Affairs’ attention is centred around compliance to the Immigration Act and other applicable pieces of legislation pertaining to foreign nationals. SAPS supports the work of Immigration Officers and ensures that there are no criminal activities in the industry at company level and on the road. The National Bargaining Council for Road Freight and Logistics Industry (NBCRFLI) scrutinizes compliance with conditions of employment covered in the collective agreement.
