EC Govt opens clinics for implementation of National Health Insurance Programmes

In a move geared towards ensuring that there is universal access to healthcare through the implementation of national health insurance programmes in the Eastern Cape, Health MEC Ms Helen Sauls-August will officially open two state of the art clinics built in the rural areas of the province.

The opening of clinics is part of implementing the Re-Engineering of Primary Health Care as a cornerstone to the National Health Insurance (NHI).  The department is leveraging on lessons learnt from the OR Tambo national NHI and Alfred Nzo provincial pilot sites to roll out the next phase of NHI readiness program to the rest of the health districts in the province.

The first clinic to be opened Zabasa Clinic- Engcobo. The services available in the clinic include national health insurance programmes of Central Chronic Medicine Dispensing Distribution which entails patients providing designated, accredited pickup point for chronic patients;Ward Based Outreach Teams and Integrated School Health Services.  The clinic has been built at a cost of R17.5 million rands. The second clinic is Mahlubini/ Qutsu clinic- Cofimvaba which has been built at the cost of R18.5 million rands. The planned services at the clinic include rehabilitation Services, Pharmacy Services, Psychological services, NHLS Services.  Both clinics will be opened tomorrow starting in Zabasa Clinic, Engcobo at 08H00 and Mahlubini clinic at 14H00.
