Dr Tshepo Motsepe to address launch of Kanana Early Childhood Development Centre
First Lady Dr Tshepo Motsepe will on Thursday, 12 March 2020, deliver the keynote address at the Launch of the Kanana Early Childhood Care Centre (ECD) at Kanana Township in Orkney.
Dr Motsepe will undertake this engagement in her capacity as Patron of the South African Civil Society for Women’s, Adolescents’ and Children’s Health (SACSoWACH).
The establishment of the Kanana Early Childhood Centre is an outcome of a March 2015 visit to the Kanana community by the then-Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa as part of a World Tuberculosis Day programme.
During that visit, the then-Deputy President visited three small, under-resourced practitioner-run facilities contending with severe overcrowding.
The Deputy President was joined on the walkabout by the Minister of Health, community councillors and executives from Aspen Pharmacare.
Aspen Pharmacare pledged to support the existing ECD facilities with the construction of a consolidated, fully functional and fully resourced ECD centre.
Aspen Pharmacare subsequently collaborated with the Adopt-a-School Foundation on the construction of the ECD centre based on the Adopt-a-School Foundation’s model for supporting the creation and enhancement of a conducive learning and teaching environment in disadvantaged schools.
The Foundation is a partner entity of the Cyril Ramaphosa Foundation.
The new ECD Centre replaces several overcrowded shacks previously used to educate and care for pre-school children.
The launch will be attended by various stakeholders through whose partnership the Kanana Early Childhood Care Centre was constructed. These include Aspen Pharmacare, the three former ECD centres, the National Department of Health, the North West Department of Social Development, the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality and the Adopt-a-School Foundation.
