Deputy Minister Njabulo Nzuza leads a Home Affairs community services Imbizo in Esikhaleni, on Nelson Mandela International Day, 17 Jul

On Monday 18 July 2022, Home Affairs Deputy Minister, Mr Njabulo Nzuza, will lead a Community Services Imbizo in Esikhaleni Township, near eMpangeni on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast, in celebration of the Nelson Mandela International Day. His first stop will be at Queen Nandi Provincial Hospital where he will handover birth certificates to mothers as part of Mandela Day.

Through this imbizo, which is a part of government’s public participation programme, Deputy Minister Nzuza will join the people of the world in honouring former President Nelson Mandela, by helping community members to access public services closer to their homes. To this end, Home Affairs Mobile units will be deployed at Esikhawini College Sports Grounds for citizens to apply for smart ID cards and passports.

“Without enabling documents, such as IDs, birth, marriage and death certificates, citizens cannot enjoy human rights which are guaranteed in the Constitution, including the right to citizenship, the right to a name, the right to vote and to stand for election”, says Deputy Minister Nzuza.

Nelson Mandela International Day is an annual international day in honour of Dr Nelson Mandela. It is celebrated on 18 July, which is Dr Mandela’s birthday. The day was officially declared by the United Nations, in November 2009.

“We are intensifying our programme to bring Home Affairs services closer to the people through our mobile offices. We are also continuing to open our offices in hospitals as part of the early birth registration campaign, to make it easier for parents to register their children within 30 days of birth”, concludes the Deputy Minister.
