Deputy Minister Andries Nel participates at the conference on State Capture and its aftermath, 23 Oct

The Deputy Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Mr Andries Nel will participate at the Conference on State Capture and its aftermath - Building Responsiveness through State Reform

The Public Affairs Research Institute (PARI), working in partnership with a broader civil-society, is hosting this conference on reconstructing public institutions in South Africa in the aftermath of state capture.

The conference will bring together scholars and practitioners from across the world to discuss and share their experiences of state reform initiatives in countries struggling with the legacies of colonialism, fragmentation, poverty and inequality.

The purpose of the conference will be three-fold:

  • to present new and original research, and solidify PARI’s academic lead in thinking about the State and institutions in South Africa and more broadly;
  • to demonstrate PARI’s understanding of public institutions on the basis of its experience working with them and with civil servants; and
  • to leverage this academic authority and experience to drive a politically influential conversation about how to reform and professionalise the South African state.

Deputy Minister will be part of a panel that will share some reflections on Local Government, Politics, Public Administration and Local Citizens, focusing on whether the concept of ‘capture’ as has been understood in the South African context is useful in depicting what has happened at local government level and whether it assists in devising solutions to local government challenges.

The Media is advised of the planned event to be held as follows:

Date: Tuesday, 23 October 2018
Time: 14:00
Venue: School of Tourism & Hospitality University of Johannesburg Bunting Road, Auckland Park
