The Deputy Minister of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries Ms Makhotso Sotyu will visit the Robben Island World Heritage Site on Monday, 28 December 2020.
Robben Island was inscribed on the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) World Heritage List in 1999 and further declared as a World Heritage Site in terms of the Act in 2007. It is amongst the ten (10) World Heritage Sites in South Africa. When the World Heritage Committee inscribed this property on the World Heritage List, it was on the basis of criteria (iii) which refers to the buildings of Robben Island that bear eloquent witness to its sombre history; and criteria (vi) on the basis that Robben Island and its prison buildings symbolise the triumph of the human spirit, of freedom, and of democracy over oppression.
The department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries is responsible for oversight of the Robben Island World Heritage Site and in particular the implementation of the Integrated Management Plan.
Deputy Minister Sotyu, will be joined by the 20 learners selected from two secondary schools in Langa and Bonteheuwel as part of providing an opportunity to learners to visit and learn about this important internationally acclaimed UNESCO World Heritage Site.
