Deputy Minister Makhotso Sotyu concludes National Arbor Month campaign in Kimberley, 28 Sept

The Deputy Minister of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries, Ms Makhotso Sotyu will conclude the National Arbour Month campaign with the launch of a memorial garden at Mathibe Community Park, tree planting and handing over of 150 eco school desks to Zingisa Primary School in Galeshewe, Kimberley, Northern Cape on Monday 28 September 2020.

National Arbour Month is an annual campaign coordinated by the Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries in partnership with Total South Africa. This year’s campaign has been coordinated under the theme “Forests and Biodiversity,” signifying the importance of protecting and conserving our biodiversity as the backbone of our economy and livelihoods.

The tree planting activities for the 2020 National Arbour Month campaign has been focusing on remembrance and commemorative tree planting and greening of settlements as well as the creation of Remembrance gardens. Such gardens were launched in the Free State and Gauteng provinces.

Part of her visit to Galeshewe will include leading a clean-up campaign. The clean-up will be preceded by activities which include a community outreach to raise awareness about waste management as part of the Department’s Good Green Deeds programme. The programme aims to change attitudes and behaviour towards waste - and enable people to take responsibility for keeping their communities clean. It promotes separation of waste at source and encourage everyone to re-use, recycle and recover waste at their households.

The Deputy Minister will also handover skip bins to Sol Plaatje Municipality as part of the Good Green Deeds programme. Skip bins are the best solution for the temporary storage of waste in the communities to protect the human health, well-being and the environment.
