Deputy Minister Makgotso Sotyu addresses virtual Forest21 Workshop, 14, Apr

The Deputy Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Ms Makgotso Sotyu, will deliver a keynote address at the two-day virtual launch of the FOREST21 Project tomorrow, Wednesday 14 April 2021.

FOREST21 is a joint project for strengthening capacity in South African higher education in forestry. The project is implemented in collaboration with five higher education institutions (HEIs) in South Africa that have forestry curricula or will start teaching forestry. These are: Nelson Mandela University, Stellenbosch University, Tshwane University of Technology, and the University of Venda and, two universities in Finland, and one in Norway.

The project aims to strengthen capacity in South African higher education institutions by offering forestry in its academic curriculum. The capacity-building project is called “21st Century Climate-Smart Forestry Education for Livelihoods and Sustainability in South Africa”.  Through the FORESTS21, graduates will be equipped with problem-solving skills, entrepreneurial mind-sets and climate-smart thinking and innovativeness.
