Deputy Minister Bogopane-Zulu attends sod-turning ceremony for Hlayisani Centre of Hope in Mpumalanga, 18 Sep

Deputy Minister Bogopane-Zulu to attend sod-turning ceremony for Hlayisani Centre of Hope in Mpumalanga province

The Deputy Minister of Social Development, Mrs Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu, will on Wednesday, 18 September 2019 officiate at the sod-turning ceremony of Hlayisani Centre of Hope in Khumbula village, Mpumalanga Province.

Hlayisani– meaning ‘to take care or to look after’ in Xitsonga language is a beacon of hope for residents, offering multiple community services, maintaining and growing food gardens as well as providing meals to those in need. The multipurpose disability centre will provide much-needed recreational and rehabilitation services, skills development and employment opportunities particularly for persons with disabilities in Hlayisani and other under-serviced surrounding villages under the Enhlanzeni District Municipality.

Under the leadership of Deputy Minister Bogopane-Zulu and as part of Mikondzo intervention, the Department and its public entities conducted a door-door ward based profiling and community-based planning in 2015 which culminated into the establishment of a local non-profit organisation in the area. Since then, Hlayisani Centre has been instrumental in pioneering a number of interventions in the area under the sustainable livelihood programme.

Key amongst these is Hlayisani white door centre which provides psychosocial support services to survivors of domestic and gender based violence, early childhood development centre, a multimedia computer centre and a food security project all of which benefit over 750 indigent families in the area and the surrounding villages.

Hlayisani Centre of Hope is an addition to an impressive portfolio of social development services and will reach more people in the area still confronted by the triple challenges of poverty, unemployment and inequality especially in the face of the current economic climate. The construction of Hlayisani Centre of Hope has been made possible by a grant to the tune of R13 Million Rand from the National Lotteries Commission.
