Deputy Minister Maggie Sotyu leads International Mother Language Day commemoration, 22 Feb

The Deputy Minister of Arts and Culture, Ms Makhotso Maggie Sotyu to lead the annual commemoration of International Mother Language Day, Khayelitsha.

The Department of Arts and Culture and the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport together with the National Library of South Africa celebrate International Mother Language Day (IMLD) led by the Deputy Minister of Arts and Culture, Honourable Maggie Sotyu. This year’s celebration fits well with the United Nation’s resolution that proclaim 2019 as the International Year of Indigenous Languages.

The day was proclaimed by the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in November 1999. UNESCO supports mother language and multilingual education through International Mother Language Day (IMLD). The IMLD is a worldwide annual observance on 21 February to promote awareness of multilingualism and cultural diversity.  Worldwide, people identify themselves through their mother tongues. Mother language is the first language people use to communicate, to express their thoughts, their emotions and their ideas. The 2019 celebration aims to highlight the importance of indigenous languages and to inspire all South Africans, including those with special needs, to promote, preserve and protect all South African languages.

The Department of Arts and Culture through the National Library of South promotes a culture of reading, writing and publishing in all local languages.
