Deputy Minister Makhotso Sotyu hands over 250 eco school desks at Ukhanyo and Perivale Primary Schools, 14 Feb

Deputy Minister Makhotso Sotyu to hand-over 250 Eco school desks

The Deputy Minister of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries, Ms. Makhotso Sotyu, is set to hand-over a total of 250 eco school desks on Friday the 14th of February 2020, at Ukhanyo and Perivale Primary Schools in Cape Town, as part of the Department’s Back to School Programme.

The main purpose of the back to school initiative is to ensure that advocacy programmes on environmental issues which address climate change, pollution and biodiversity conservation, reach the learners first and foremost.

Eco desks are made from the wood of invasive alien plants cleared as part of the Working for Water (WfW) programme.

Some of the primary objectives of the WfW programme is to gain water security through the clearing of invasive plant biomass from catchments which allows for increased water flows to downstream communities, as well as job creation and up-skilling of participants through the processing of the biomass into furniture which is used to meet Government’s service delivery mandate.

In addition to the desk hand-over, Minister Sotyu will also donate, garden tools, waste bins, school uniforms, sanitary pads and plant trees at the respective schools.
