Employment and Labour begins blitz inspection of Agricultural Sector, 16 to 18 Mar

Department prepares for agri-sector inspections

The Department of Employment and Labour will formally kick off its blitz inspection of the Agricultural Sector next week.  The blitz forms part of the Department’s provincial work plan which seeks to address non-compliance in high-risk areas.

During the course of next week (16-18 March), labour inspectors will embark on a series of inspections at farms in the Franschhoek and Simondium areas.  Inspectors have been roped in from all corners of the province to assist with this blitz inspection, as the Department seeks to raise compliance in the sector.

The driving force behind this initiative is the Inspection and Enforcement Services (IES) unit, a specialised unit within the Department with a specific focus on ensuring compliance within the labour market.

The objectives of the blitz inspection are to determine the level of compliance in the agri-sector, to provide advice, to educate and to give technical information and support to both workers and employers. The IES unit will conduct inspections with the view to enforce all labour laws in order to promote sound labour practices and improved working conditions as well as the implementation of the new minimum wages.  Compliance with the Unemployment Insurance Fund and Occupational Health and Safety will also be tested.

Inspectors will be joined by Aggy Moiloa, Inspector General at the Department of Employment and Labour.  She is expected to conduct unannounced visits to farms in the area.
