Basic Education invites failed May/June Matric Examination candidates to register again

Department of Basic Education invites Mid-Year candidates who wrote and did not pass to register for another opportunity

The Department of Basic Education invites all examination candidates who wrote and did not pass in the May/June Matric Examination that took place this year to register for another opportunity to sit for the exams.

The Minister of Basic Education, Mrs Angie Motshekga, has approved that Senior Certificate (SC) candidates who wrote the June 2019 examination and failed, as well as those that were absent with a valid reason, be allowed to write the November 2019 Examinations. It should be noted that the opportunity is open only to Senior Certificate (SC) candidates and not to National Senior Certificate (NSC.

The following criteria would therefore apply to Senior Certificate candidates that wrote the May/June 2019 examination and now intend registering for the November 2019 examination:

Only candidates who registered and wrote the June 2019 examination and failed (i.e. achieved below 30% for the subject or below 40% in the case of Home Language)

Candidates who registered and were absent with a valid reason.

Absent with a valid reason implies:

  • In the case of illness a copy of the medical certificate must be provided.
  • If there was a death in the immediate family of a candidate, the candidate must produce a death certificate.
  • For any other reason or circumstance beyond the control of the candidate, an affidavit must be provided. The valid reason(s) contained in the affidavit may be subjected to evaluation and verification by the Head of Examinations or a delegated examination official.

Candidates who registered for the June 2019 Senior Certificate Examination, but did not turn up to write, without a valid reason, do not qualify to write the November 2019 Examination A candidate who did not write one or more question papers in a specific subject, in the June 2019 examination, based on a valid reason, must write all question papers for the entire subject in the November 2019 examination. Candidates will be able to register on-line by logging on to the DBE website www.education.gov.za, where a link to the registration system will be available.

The On-line system will only allow candidates to register for subjects that they wrote and failed or were absent. Hence, candidates will not be allowed to register for subjects they did not write in June 2019 or for any subject for which they achieved more than 30% or 40% in the case of Home Language.

Candidates will not be allowed to register to upgrade their results in any of their subjects which they registered, wrote and passed in June 2019. They may register to upgrade their results in June 2020.

Candidates that were absent with a valid reason and register on-line, must present the document/S supporting the reason/s for their absence to the nearest circuit, district or provincial office. The supporting documents cannot be uploaded on-line.

Candidates that do not have access to the On-line system may register at the nearest examination centre, circuit, district or provincial office.

The registration form is attached as Annexure A. and must be used by all candidates applying manually at the provincial, district, circuit office or examination centre. Candidates that apply at the provincial, district, circuit office or examination centre will not be registered if they do not comply with the criteria as stipulated in paragraphs (2), (3) and (6). A copy of the Statement of Results for the June 2019 examination, must be attached to the Registration Form, only in the case of manual registration.

In order to register (both on-line and manual), candidates must provide an email address at which they can be contacted and a cell phone number, so that further details regarding the examination can be communicated via email or cell phone.
