Committee welcomes sentencing of convicted rapist

The Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s (GPL) Portfolio Committee on Community Safety has today welcomed the hefty sentencing of the disgraced rapist Nicholas Ninow.

Ninow was found guilty of raping a 7-year-old girl in the bathroom of a Dros restaurant in Pretoria last year.

Ninow was today sentenced by the Gauteng High Court to life imprisonment for rape and five years for drug possession.  The court also ordered that Ninow’s name be added to the sexual offenders’ registry.

The hefty sentence should be seen as a clear demonstration that the South African society has become intolerant of sexual abuse more so when it is perpetuated against women, children and the elderly who are the most vulnerable in our society.

The Committee applauds the team comprising of law enforcement officers, prosecutors and all those who worked tirelessly to facilitate the process of gathering evidence that was presented before the court in aggravation of the sentence.

The Committee appeals to the Judiciary to impose similar or harsher sentences against those found to be guilty of such crimes.

The Committee further extends its sincere sympathy to the victim and her family for the suffering and trauma they have endured as a result of the senseless act committed Ninow.
