Gauteng Legislature engages stakeholders on its capacity to oversee law enforcement in Gauteng,13 Mar

Gauteng Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Community Safety will hold a roundtable discussion to solicit inputs from various stakeholders, as it assesses the capacity of the Gauteng Department of Community Safety to oversee the performance and conduct of Law Enforcement Agencies in the Province.

The Department of Community Safety plays a critical role of overseeing the performance and conduct of Law Enforcement Agencies in Gauteng to ensure that there is improved policing, enhanced social crime prevention and public confidence in the capacity of government to fight crime in the Province.

The Portfolio Committee on Community Safety has thus resolved to conduct a Focus Intervention Study to assess whether the Department is adequately and effectively fulfilling its oversight role.

This is to ensure that where necessary, the Committee is able to make a recommendation on interventions that will strengthen and ensure effective oversight on the conduct and performance of Law Enforcement Agencies by the Department to ultimately ensure that Gauteng is a place where people are and feel safe at all times.

Amongst the stakeholders expected to be part of the discussion are the Gauteng MEC for Community Safety, Gauteng Police Commissioner, MMCs for Public Safety from Municipalities, Representatives from IPID and the Gauteng Chairperson for Community Police Forum

Details of the Roundtable discussion are as follows:

Date:  Friday, 13 March 2020
Time:  10h00
Venue:  The Capital 20 West, Sandton
