Deputy Minister of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries to visit the China-South Africa Agricultural Demonstration Centre and Bethulie fish farm in Free State

The Deputy Minister of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries Ms Makhotso Sotyu will visit the China-South Africa Aquaculture Technology Demonstration Center (ATDC) in Gariep, Free State on Friday, 4 December 2020.

The more than R3 million facility was established over thirty years ago as a fish hatchery and was upgraded in February 2013 to serve as a training and demonstration centre on different freshwater fish species. It is located in the Xhariep District, next to the Gariep Dam along the Orange River System from which it receives its water supply.

The Center was established to increase awareness of the freshwater aquaculture sector both regionally and nationally on the opportunities that aquaculture has. The Centre plays a key role in contributing towards the sustainable development of the aquaculture and fisheries sector. The services provided at the center benefit the Southern African Developing Communities (SADC) countries.

Deputy Minister Sotyu, accompanied by the Free State MEC for Economic, Small Business Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs Mr. Makolo Mohale, MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development

Mr. Kwekwe Bulwane and Executive Mayor of Xhariep District Municipality Cllr Motshewa Sehanka will also visit to a local community based satellite catfish farm in Bethulie.
