Premier David Makhura renames Carletonville’s R501 after Elijah Barayi, 23 Feb

Carletonville’s R501 to be renamed after late trade unionist and liberation struggle hero Elijah Barayi

Gauteng Premier, David Makhura will on Saturday, 23 February 2019 honour and commemorate trade unionist and liberation stalwart, Elijah Barayi.

Premier Makhura together with Merafong Executive Mayor, Maphefo Mogale-Letsie and representatives from Cosatu and National Union of Mineworkers will start the programme with a wreath laying ceremony at the West Wits Carletonville Cemetery. 

Barayi died in January 1994 before the first democratic elections in South Africa. A process is underway to declare his grave a provincial heritage site.

The event will then move to Carletonville Multipurpose Sports Complex for the Premier’s keynote address and the pronouncement to rename R501 after Elijah Barayi.
