Candidates contesting municipal by-elections

Two municipal ward by-elections will take place in the Eastern Cape on Wednesday, 15 May 2019.

The by-elections will be contested by ten candidates from five political parties. 

The details of the by-elections are as follows:

  • Ward 35 in Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality – NMA will be contested by Yolande Annalize Van Sensie from the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP), Gary Stanton Van Niekerk from the African National Congress (ANC), Helga Christelle Van Staaden from the Democratic Alliance (DA), David Geoffrey Samuel Petersen from the Patriotic Alliance (PA) and Brian Desmond Kivedo from the Socialist Revolutionary Workers Party (SRWP).

The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s termination from the political party.

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 municipal elections was 68.64% and the DA candidate won the ward with 86.83% of valid votes.

  • Ward 37 in Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality – NMA will be contested by John Abrahams Stone from the ACDP, Norman Malambo from the ANC, Georgina Faldtman from the DA, Quintin Martin Theo Baatjies from the PA and Bevlin Charlotte Minish from the SRWP.

The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s termination from the political party.

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 municipal elections was 65.08% and the DA candidate won the ward with 68.66% of valid votes.
