Basic Education hosts National Education Excellence Awards in Pretoria, 13 Mar

Minister and Deputy Minister of Basic Education to honour top performing education districts and schools at the 2020 National Education Excellence Awards in Pretoria

The Minister of Basic Education, Mrs Angie Motshekga and Deputy Minister, Dr Reginah Mhaule will honour and celebrate excellence in District and School performance at the annual National Education Excellence Awards (NEEAs) taking place at the Glen High School in Waterkloof, Pretoria on Friday, 13 March 2020.

The awards programme were introduced in 2014 to celebrate and recognise the remarkable work done by districts and schools and acknowledge various district officials who firmly guide schools to adhere to the core business of the schooling system, which is to deliver quality learning and teaching.

Districts are the crucial interface of the Basic Education Sector in identifying best practice, sharing information and providing support to schools. The continued growth in the performance of districts is closely monitored and evaluated by both the national and provincial education departments to ensure that the South African education system continues to deliver quality education through its 25,154 schools and 75 districts across all nine provinces.

In 2020 the Minister will also recognise schools that are making exceptional inroads into the improvement of quality of outcomes in the poorest quintiles – Q1 – 3 – with a focus on those districts that have contributed to the highest improvement in Mathematics, Physical Science and Bachelor passes over the past five years.
