The Minister of Arts and Culture, Mr Nathi Mthethwa will tomorrow, 08 August 2018 lead a panel discussion on gender. The dialogue will be framed around the life story of Mama Albertina Sisulu, a doyen of the liberation struggle in her own right, and whose centenary is being celebrated and commemorated this year.
The panel discussion will take place at the Major Sports Hall, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, Bellville Campus, in Cape Town. Minister Mthethwa will be joined by Minister Bathabile Dlamini, the Minister in the Presidency responsible for Women. The Deputy Minister of Arts & Culture, the Hon. Maggie Sotyu and the Deputy Minister of Communications, the Hon. Pinky Kekana will also join the panel discussion.
Other speakers include: Dr Trunette Joseph (Teaching & Learning Coordinator: Faculty of Engineering, CPUT), Ms Faith Sibiya (CPUT SRC Chair: Mowbray Campus) and Ms Charlotte Lobe (International Gender Protocol & Instruments: Department of International Relations & Cooperation). The discussion is a precursor to the main commemoration for Women’s Day 09 August 2018, in Paarl.
The dialogue forms part of the 2018 Women’s Month programme under the theme, “100 Years of Albertina Sisulu: Women United in Moving South Africa Forward”.
The discussion will decipher the history of the struggle for liberation in general and gender equality in particular, focussing on the role played by women. The discussion will employ the life story of Mama Albertina Sisulu as an anchor to the discussion, focusing on her life story and the values she espoused as a mother, a struggle icon and a professional (noting that she was a registered nurse and had practiced nursing while also playing other roles). This is also meant to be a reflective platform in recounting the many gains made for women since the advent of freedom and democracy in 1994.
The discussion will foreground and critically assess some of the legislative, policy and programmatic responses at the level of the state. The platform will also be a call to action for the different sectors in society, including business, faith-based organisations, organised labour, media, the intelligentsia and the academic community, among others, in systematically dealing with all the impediments that continue to stymie progress for women, with some focus on the unrelenting scourge of gender based violence and violence against children.
