School Health Week

Government has pledged to put the health of school children first by rolling out the School Health Screening Programme. The programme brings basic health screening to learners at schools in areas that have been identified as priority health districts.These include schools in areas least likely to have access to health care services.

The Department of Health, in partnership with the Department of Basic Education, conducts basic health screening for Grade 1 and foundation phase learners.The programme offers a comprehensive and integrated package of services including sexual and reproductive health services for older learners.

During 2013/2014, the programme aimed to reach 700 000 learners in grades 1, 4, 8 and 10 in quintile 1 and 2 schools. Learners in Grade 4 in quintile 1 schools will receive health education. All learners repeating grades in quintile 1 and 2 schools will also receive health screening.
