Retired teachers welcome invitation from the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE)

Retired teachers have applauded the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) for re-calling them in a bid to improve the standard of education in the province.

Speaking to Gauteng online, Edmin Pillay, a former principal who served 40 years as a principal, said that he felt that the initiative to engage experienced principals in the discussion was a good.

"We are here to give a constructive way forward, to find a solution to the current education system," said Pillay.

He however felt that, "too many people were involved. And in order for us to be effective in making a contribution, we need to confine ourselves to a limited number. It would be best if we were broken into groups."

Another former teacher, Susan Moletsane, agreed with Pillay and welcomed the initiative to get experienced people back into the system. She said, "It is a good attempt to call all retired teachers to come and help but our hours must be lesser than those on permanent basis."

Moletsane called on the department to provide more details about its plans in terms of time-frames and remuneration.
