International Year of the Desert and Desertification

Media are invited to the official launch of the International Year of the
Deserts and Desertification on Thursday, 16 March 2006, in Madibaneng, Limpopo
Province.
Rejoice Mabudafhasi, the Deputy Minister for Environmental Affairs and
Tourism is expected to commit R5 million in funding for the Madibaneng Soil
Conservation Project (MSCP). The groundbreaking project seeks to rehabilitate
agricultural land while introducing erosion control measures and the
improvement of grazing management.
The year 2006 was declared International Year of Deserts and Desertification
by the General Assembly of the United Nations, who has expressed concern over
the severe impact of desertification particularly for the African
continent.
Under the theme, âDesertification: a threat to humanity,â the Department of
Environmental Affairs and Tourism will highlight the perils of desertification
while embarking on numerous intergovernmental interventions in an attempt to
address specific challenges.
