Public Works Minister Thulas Nxesi, MP, visits Public Works projects in KwaZulu-Natal

The Minister of Public Works, Mr Thembeleni ‘Thulas’ Nxesi, MP will visit the Province of KwaZulu-Natal as part of the two day meeting of the Minister with the nine Public Works MECs (MinMEC) hosted by the KwaZulu-Natal Public Works Department in Durban.

MinMEC is the regular forum of the Minister and the provincial MECs that takes stock of service delivery implementation.

Members of the media are hereby cordially invited to join the Ministerial delegation as they visit some of the projects undertaken by the Department of Public Works in KwaZulu-Natal on Thursday, 6 December 2012.

The visit will be an occasion for the Provincial and National Departments of Public Works to showcase some of their current infrastructure delivery projects.

Some of the sites to be visited include the following:

  • Shongweni Dam Clinic – This newly constructed facility is the first in the area and will replace the mobile clinic currently servicing the community.
  • Phoenix Community Health Care Centre, which is undergoing upgrading and renovations.                                                                             

The projects have not only created job opportunities for the communities, but also fast-tracked service delivery on the priorities of Government including Health, Education, Safety and Security and Rural Development.

Members of the media are invited to join the projects visits and the National Contractor Development Programme (NCDP)  launch later as follows:

Transport has been made available for members of the media wishing to be part of the Ministerial entourage that will be visiting the aforementioned projects.

A media briefing and lunch have been planned at the second site visit in Phoenix where members of the media will also get a chance to interact with the Minister and the different MECs.

Members of the media keen to be part of the Ministerial entourage are kindly requested to inform Mr Baloyi (on the contact mobile number below) by tomorrow at 10h00 for logistical and planning purposes.
We also kindly request that members of the media to also provide and carry their Identity Numbers as we will be using Government Transport during sites visits.

NB. Due to the nature of the construction sites that will be visited, we kindly advise that members of the media wear covered shoes, preferably safety shoes and where possible, hard hats will be provided in order to comply with the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements at construction sites.

The media bus will be parked outside Playhouse Company from 08h30 on Thursday departing at 09h20 to the first site to be visited at Shongweni Dam Clinic, west of Durban.

In the same afternoon, the Minister will join the construction and built environment fraternity as he launches the National Contractor Development Programme (NCDP) – a joint initiative of Public Works and the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB).
