Police leadership to host a two-day Strategic Planning meeting with top 1 500 stations and cluster Commanders

The Minister of Police, Nathi Mthethwa, the Deputy Minister of Police, Ms Makhotso Sotyu and the National Commissioner of Police, General Riah Phiyega will hold a two-day (18-19 January 2013) strategic planning meeting with the all the South African Police Service (SAPS) Station Commanders, Cluster Commanders, Provincial Commissioners and Top Management at Birchwood Conference Centre, Kempton Park, Gauteng.

Society looks upon police to protect them against criminals, as such to succeed in this work police must serve society with commitment, care and effectiveness. This two-day meeting will amongst others, examine and audit our all-round performance of the SAPS. We will therefore pay attention to issues such as strengthening command and control, partnerships with communities, allocation of resources, training and many other operational frameworks.

The meeting will further discuss, review and improve the various strategies and plans that are geared towards effective crime reduction. As part of government’s five key priorities, reducing crime remains a focal priority and as members of the SAPS, we all have different roles to play in this regard.

The crime statistics, various independent statistics as well as the successes in the security-related to hosting of major international events are testimony to some of the successes that police deliver on. However, there are still numerous challenges facing the SAPS and this meeting aims to address them; thereafter formulate implementable resolutions going forward.

We want our police stations to become models of excellence. The treatment we give to people who visit police stations in search of some assistance leaves lasting impressions not only about that particular station, but about SAPS as a whole.
