The Minister of Police, Nathi Mthethwa will today hold discussions with United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of Migrants, Jorge Bustamante.
The discussions will centre around government’s approach in dealing with some of the anti foreigner sentiments which engulfed the country during the first half of last year. Through coordinated efforts involving police, home affairs, justice, civic organisations, political parties, youth formations, religious fraternity and other role-players, government managed to prevent what could have been catastrophic incidents of violence against foreign nationals in South Africa.
They will also share ideas on how the UN and South Africa can foster partnerships, particularly around the role of foreign nationals’ involvement in helping government curb the scourge of crime e.g. active participation in community policing forums.
Mr Bustamante is on an official visit to South Africa.
