MEC Tate Makgoe to beef up learner transport

Farm learners who travel long kilometres to and from schools are set to benefit from the provision of 10 sixty sitter buses provided by the Free State Department of Education. On Friday, 15 February 2013 Free State Education MEC, Tate Makgoe will handover these buses to the districts.

Asked why the department has procured these buses, MEC Makgoe said “we want to improve access to education by our learners. No learner must be denied the right to education because of lack of transport”.

He added that   in order to strengthen improved learners performance in the province the department will continue to invest in learner support programmes. In 2012/13 financial year a total of R36.3 million has been budgeted for scholar transport.

There are 8 851 learners that are transported daily with 367 routes from 166 farm schools.
