Deputy Minister Bheki Cele visits blind farmers in Ga-Rankuwa, 25 Nov

“Promoting and supporting youth in farming initiatives, contributing to job creation”

The Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, General Bheki Cele, will visit blind farmers in Ga-Rankuwa, north of Pretoria. Details of the visit are as follows:

Date: Tuesday, 25 November 2014
Venue: 2935 Zone 2, Ga-Rankuwa
Time: 10h00

In responding positively to the priorities of the department, the Deputy Minister will engage with the blind farmers of Ga-Rankuwa on a number of issues relating to the farming activities in their community. This follows a request by the Ikemiseng NGO for the Blind for the leadership of the department to visit the blind farmers and have first-hand experience on the unique, yet vision-driven form of farming.

Government has a fundamental responsibility to address the issue of job creation, particularly for women and the youth. Furthermore, the mandate of the department is to empower and support smallholder farmers through effective, efficient and sustainable programmes that will ensure their growth in the sector.

The Deputy Minister is greatly passionate and enthusiastic about the love of agriculture by blind farmers. “It is indeed heart-warming and astounding to be exposed to the many platforms and different environments available within the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. Indeed, the sector has huge potential for growth and development, therefore it is imperative for government to transform the sector and ensure youth involvement in the sector,” said Cele.
