Labour conducts Agriculture Blitz Inspections in Malelane, 27 to 31 May

Department of Labour inspectors set to conduct week long Agriculture Blitz Inspections in Malelane, Mpumalanga

As part of the workers month programme, the Department of Labour Inspection and Enforcement Services (IES) in the Mpumalanga Province is set to conduct rigorous blitz inspections in the area of Malelane from the 27 to 31 May 2019, with a special focus to the agriculture sector.

The province decided to conduct integrated inspections in the area of Malelane, with the aim of advising employers and employees on the provisions of the employment law. The project will also test the compliance levels with regards to the newly promulgated National Minimum Wage Act; the Occupational Health and Safety Act; Basic Conditions of Employment Act; Unemployment Insurance Act and Unemployment Contributions Act.

Provincial Chief Inspector Nonyaniso Njwambe says, while it is worth noting that the National Minimum Wage Act (NMWA) prescribes wages in this particular sector to be at R18 per hour, employers who are paying above this rate should take note that the law does not allow them to decrease the wages in order to align with the NMWA.

“Non-compliance will be addressed through the enforcement processes. The compliance with employment law requires collaborated efforts from different stakeholders. These will include employers, employees and Department of Labour,” said Njwambe.

The purpose of workers month this year is to advocate for all employment laws to relevant stakeholders in the Malelane area; to examine how national labour standards are applied in the workplace through inspection and enforcement of employment laws and; to educate and advise social partners on labour market policies.

The blitz inspection will take the integrated approach whereby all relevant fields within inspection and enforcement services will form part of the teams comprising of OHS Inspectors, Employment Standard Inspectors, Employer Audit Inspectors and Employment Equity Inspectors.
