Social Development hosts Presidential Social Sector Dialogue in Western Cape, 28 to 29 May

The Department of Social Development will hold a two-day Presidential Social Sector Dialogue with community-based, faith-based and non-profit organisations in the Western Cape Province from 28-29 May 2019.

The provincial dialogues are a precursor to the Presidential Social Sector Summit which is expected to be held later this year. In his maiden State of the Nation Address (2018), President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that government will convene a social sector summit that will amongst others, seek to improve the interface between the state and civil society and also to address challenges facing the sector.

Government cannot single-handedly address the developmental challenges confronting South Africa.  The Summit is therefore in recognition of the critical role that NGOs, and CBOs play in tackling poverty, unemployment, inequality and related social problems such as alcohol and substance abuse, gender-based violence, amongst others.

The National Development Plan calls for an active citizenry, a critical step towards building a South Africa we want. The engagement between government and civil society orgnisations forms part of the President Ramaphosa’s call for all key sectors of our society to work together to renew and grow South Africa.

The Department of Social Development (DSD) is the custodian of the Non-Profit Organisation (Act No. 17 of 2000), which provides an administrative and regulatory framework within which non-profit organisations can conduct their affairs and contribute to advancing South Africa’s development agenda. Currently, there are 186 988 organisations registered as NPOs in terms of the NPO Act.

The discussion of the provincial dialogue will focus on key issues in the sector, including regulatory framework, capacity building, resource mobilisation and transformation of the sector.

To date, the Department of Social Development in collaboration with the National Development Agency and the Presidency has conducted provincial dialogues in 8 provinces, with the Western Cape being the final one.
