Premier Supra Mahumapelo on Villages, Townships and Small Dorpies economic opportunities

VTSD economic opportunities must be deeply explored – Premier Mahumapelo

The Premier of the North West Supra Mahumapelo has challenged people in the province’s villages, townships and small dorpies to think big and ponder creating their own brands.

Mahumapelo says working in partnership with the state owned entities such as the North West Development Corporation, industrialisation in the Villages, Townships and Small Dorpies (VTSD) areas can be explored, as it has great potential to address the triple challenges of poverty, unemployment and inequalities.

Premier Mahumapelo said this today while addressing the inaugural three-day Villages, Townships and Small Dorpies (VTSD) Economic Lekgotla held at Mmabatho Convention Centre.

Attended by more than 800 delegates from business, private and public sectors in and outside the province, the VTSD Economic Lekgotla is aimed at mapping a tangible plan to realising economic growth in the province’s villages, townships and small dorpies.

“This Lekgotla is not only about identifying the economic development challenges we are facing as a province, but it must help us recognize the resources at our disposal in order for us to turn those challenges into opportunities.

“We must appreciate the fact that we cannot achieve anything if we are not action-oriented, and I call upon the private sector to join hands by expressing their interest to invest in especially our 658 villages, as they all have economic opportunities”, urged Mahumapelo.

The second day of the Lekgotla will be made up of economic focus groups which will discuss the procurement opportunities, projects and investment requirements for economic development of VTSD.

Among the dignitaries included the Minister of Communication Ms Faith Muthambi, Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Mr Des Van Rooyen, the CEO of Eskom Mr Brian Molefe, the Group Executive of Corporate Affairs Mr Hlaudi Motsoeneng, His Excellency Mr Julius Moto Ugandan Ambassador to South Africa and High Commissioner of Malawi.

Mahumapelo said the VTSD Economic Lekgotla will be an annual occasion, this to ensure that actions taken in pursuit of social economic transformation are realised.

VTSD is one of the five concretes which the fifth provincial administration has introduced in an effort to grow the economies of Villages, Townships and Small Dorpies (VTSD) and transforming the lives of the people of Bokone Bophirima.

The provincial government views VTSD concrete as a good advantage to explore the rural investment opportunities, business linkages and trading partnerships that will benefit the entrepreneurs in these areas, and also create employment to reduce the levels of poverty.
