Parliament on tabling of Promotion and Protection of Investment Bill

Trade and Industry Committee is in a workshop on trade and investment

The Portfolio Committee on Trade and Industry would like to re-iterate that the Promotion and Protection of Investment Bill has not yet been tabled in Parliament and therefore has not yet been referred to the Committee.

Committee Chairperson, Ms Joanmariae Fubbs, made this statement in response to an article “Investment bill allows for foreign arbitration” that appeared in the Business Day on 22 July 2015.

“As the public are aware Parliament, in undertaking its work, conducts committee meetings, public hearings, oversight visits, workshops and participates in debates. The Committee, as part of its regular processes, is currently engaging in a two-day training workshop on trade and investment policy as part of capacitating its Members on this part of the mandate. It would also serve as a preparation for impending legislation on the promotion and protection of investment.”

However, it must be noted the Speaker of the National Assembly would make the final decision as to which Committee a bill is referred.
