Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries honours top female entrepreneurs, 25 Aug

The year 2016 marks the 60th anniversary since more than 20 000 women of different races marched to the Union Buildings to deliver petitions against pass laws. With the dawn of democracy, different sectors saw women emerging. The agricultural, forestry and fisheries sectors, in particular, saw women taking part in ensuring food security in the country.

As part of celebrating Women’s Month, the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) in partnership with Total South Africa, will honour women entrepreneurs in the sector through the prestigious DAFF Female Entrepreneur Awards Programme.

This programme continues to honour the efforts and contribution of women, young females and women with disabilities for the role they play in food security, poverty alleviation, job creation and economic growth in the sector.

The event honours the overall winner and the nine award winners in the following categories: Best Female Worker; Best Subsistence Producer; Top Entrepreneur: Smallholder; Top Entrepreneur: Processing; Top Entrepreneur: Commercial; Top Entrepreneur: Export Markets and two Ministerial Awards for Young and Disabled Female Entrepreneurs in the sector.

The awards, running in their 16th year, will be held under the theme “Reaffirming the commitment towards women empowerment in the agriculture, forestry and fisheries sector.’’
