Sport science fitness programme for schools launched

On 22 June 2017, the Free State MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Ms Mathabo Leeto launched the Sport Science Fitness Programme which has been developed to train sport practitioners (coaches and teachers) that are responsible for preparing their athletes and teams for competitions to ensure that they are well conditioned, properly managed, and ready for the demands placed on the team during tournaments, leagues or games. The event took place at Goble Park Stadium in Bethlehem.

MEC Leeto also handed over sport equipment to various schools such as Harrismith Secondary School (Harrismith), Tiisetsang Secondary School (Bethlehem), Kgolathuto Secondary School (Qwa Qwa), Tweeling Combined School (Tweeling), and Reitz Secondary School (Reitz).

Each School also received Speed & Agility ladders, Agility cones, Agility poles with foot pieces, Skipping ropes, Physio balls, Medicine balls, Sandbells, Kettlebells, Foam rollers, Aerobic mats, Stopwatches, Measuring tape, Training Manuals, DVD’s, Bleep and YoYo CD’s.

“We launch this Sport Science Fitness Programme as a direct response to the many challenges we continue to face in identifying and developing young talent, we should be mindful of the fact that the best possible way to achieve this objective is to deliberately invest more resources in our township and rural schools. It must be stated that it is totally inhumane not to grant equal opportunities to all our young people irrespective of their background. As a Department, it remains our objective to unlock all the potential talent that our province has hence this launch of the Sport Science Fitness Programme” said MEC Mathabo Leeto.
