South Africa remains peaceful as the process of counting votes progresses

The process of counting votes is at an advanced stage and the world’s eyes are firmly on the IEC National Results Operation Centre (ROC). The ROC is a hub of activity as the results are streaming from all corners of the country. This process brings to the fore the credibility of the IEC which has since its establishment in 1997, overseen the administration and management of four credible local government elections. It is internationally regarded as an efficient and independent electoral body that remains one of our most trusted national institutions.

As part of this important constitutional process, all parties have the opportunity to voice their complaints about any issues encountered during the voting process. This platform accorded to parties and candidates further speaks to the maturity of our young democracy. As government we are confident that all the objections raised with IEC are being addressed and the election results will soon be certified.

“We are delighted that South Africans in their diversity actively embraced the right to participate in the elections as enshrined in our Constitution. We are also encouraged by the positive manner in which the public have welcomed the results as they are being announced. The way in which the elections were conducted contributes to a positive perception of South Africa and ultimately reflects the maturity of our democracy.” GCIS Acting Director-General, Donald Liphoko said.

This perception is also influenced by the efficient and effective manner in which the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and all the stakeholders have conducted the 2016 local government elections. As government we are encouraged with the voter participation in this important constitutional process and remain committed to the improvement of the ves of our people post elections. This new mandate given by citizens is indeed a catalyst for our democracy.

As we await the final outcome of the voting process, government appeals for continued calm and tolerance and calls on all South Africans to abide by the laws of our country.

Working together we can indeed move South Africa forward.
