Social Development to conduct LGBTI training workshop for communication practitioners in Cape Town

The Department of Social Development will on Tuesday, May 23, conduct Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, Transgender and Inter-sex (LGBTI) training workshop for communication practitioners in Cape Town.

This training will be facilitated by WISH Associates which is part of Sexual Reproductive Justice Coalition and seeks to equip communication practitioners with necessary skills and expertise so they can be able to report more efficiently about issues of the LGBTI.

The Training Workshop seeks to achieve the following objectives:

  • A user friendly guideline document for communication practitioners which include LGBTI definitions and language usage will be shared at the workshop;
  • Participants will be provided with guidelines on existing policies and on terminology;
  • Participants will be trained on how to adopt a critical approach, where the current norms are criticised to encourage a more inclusive society;
  • The training facilitator will educate communication practitioners and promote positive, rather than negative approach on LGBTI news coverage;
  • The training will focus on the human rights perspective;
  • Stereotypes will be addressed; and
  • The teaching methodology will include role play and activity based exercises.

The department will this year focus more on advancing the rights of the LGBTI persons by ensuring that they are not discriminated by their fellow South Africans.  As part of building an inclusive society for all South Africans, the Minister of Social Development, Ms Bathabile Dlamini, will on Thursday, May 24, host dialogues with the LGBTI community in Gugulethu.
