Social Development Committee adopts non-desirability motion on Private Member's Bill

The Portfolio Committees on Social Development has adopted a motion on the non-desirability regarding a Private Member’s Bill, which was sponsored by Mr Mike Walters.

“This Bill is abandoned in light of the fact that it raised similar issues that were already covered in the Children’s Amendment Bill [B13-2015],” said Committee Chairperson, Ms Zoleka Capa.

The Private Member’s Bill was tabled and referred to the Committee on 18 February 2015. The motion on the Bill will now be referred to the National Assembly for debate and adoption.

Meanwhile, the Committee was unimpressed with the management of the Department of Social Development for not attending today’s meeting. They were scheduled to appear before the Committee to present on programmes 1 and 5 of the department’s quarterly financial performance report for 2015/16 financial year.

“It is totally unacceptable that the department could put priority on other issues over the business of the Committee of Parliament,” said Ms Capa.
