Higher Education launches Skills Development Centre in North West

Services SETA launches Provincial Office and a Skills Development Centre in North West Province

Lack of skills and employment opportunities is a major challenge facing South African youth from disadvantaged backgrounds in the country. Many areas have a lack of study facilities or skills development centres, where young people can be trained and given the required skills to enter the job market or start their own enterprises.

The Services SETA has taken heed to Government’s call to provide young people with such an infrastructure where communities will be equipped with the necessary skills that align directly with their skills needs. This way people are enabled to play a direct role in growing the local economy and improve their own socio-economic status.

In partnership with the Department of Higher Education and training, the North West Provincial Public Works and Roads Department and the Services SETA will be launching a provincial office and a Skills Development Centre in the province.

These facilities shall be located in Klerksdorp, 74 Boom Street. As the host, North West Premier, Mr. Supra Mahumapelo shall be in attendance to accompany the Minister for Higher Education, Mr. Blade Nzimande and the MEC for North West Public Works, Mr. Madoda Sambatha, in support of the launch.

The Skills Development Centre is the only one of its kind in the province and will serve to ensure that communities in the North West are closer to training opportunities to improve their skills, increasing their job prospects in the market.

437 learners from various parts of the province, who are beneficiaries of the Department of Public Work’s Skills Development programme, which will also be launched on the day, are expected to attend this auspicious event. The Public Works Skills programme consists of learnerships and internships that include cleaning, business administration, call centre management, recognition of prior learning (RPL), national vocational certificate (NVC), boiler making, painting, plumbing and welding

Invitations have been extended to the North West Province Mayors, Members of the Mayoral Committees, local municipal managers from Tlokwe, Matlosana and Marquassi Hills, North West Provincial EXCO, North West Provincial Public Works and Roads Portfolio Committee, House of Traditional Leaders and others.

Other role players and stakeholders from business, labour and nonprofit organisations within the skills development landscape have been invited.

The Services SETA is a state entity that facilitates funding of skills development and sector based training. The funds are collected by the South African Revenue Services, via the Department of Higher Education, payable by all employers.

The Services SETA therefore plays an important role in ensuring that the quality of the skills required in the workforce is improved, increased and readily available, leading to an increased productivity and therefore a better economy in the country. Furthermore, the role of the SSETA in the recruitment sectors cannot be overstated in that prospects of job seekers in the fields are improved through learnerships, apprenticeships and bursary funding facilitated by the SSETA.

Thanks to the opening of the Skills Development Centre and the Provincial Office of the Services SETA, communities in the North West Province and surrounding areas will begin to enjoy the services of the SSETA at closer proximity.
