Western Cape hosts SA Cheese Festival, 28 to 30 Apr

Western Cape producers to exhibit at SA Cheese Festival

The Western Cape’s top food producers will be exhibiting at the SA Cheese Festival at the weekend.

This year the 16th Cheese Festival takes place between 28 April and 30 April at Sandringham.

Alan Winde, MEC of Economic Opportunities, invited residents to visit the Cape Made: Taste the Alternatives pavilion at the event. This exhibition is a partnership between the Western Cape Department of Agriculture and Agri-Expo, the organisers of the SA Cheese Festival.

MEC Winde said chefs at the Cape Made Kitchen would also demonstrate recipes with unique ways to use cheese. A recipe book which features these innovative uses of cheese will be distributed at the event.

“We’ve partnered with chefs from the Private Hotel School, the Milk Producers’ Organisation and Agri-Expo to develop this recipe book, which combines cheese with a range of foods including duck, honey, rooibos tea and vanilla. This initiative showcases the high standard of agri processing in the Western Cape, and forms part of the Western Cape Department of Agriculture’s commitment to support and promote local producers.”

MEC Winde said agriculture and agri processing were focus areas of the Western Cape Government, through its Project Khulisa economic strategy.

“Since 2014, 127 000 jobs were created in the Western Cape's agriculture and agri processing sectors, bringing the total number of residents who are employed in these sectors to 448 000. The high-quality of our produce plays an important in this growth.”

Speaking on the Cape Made: Taste the Alternatives exhibition, Johan Ehlers, Agri-Expo CEO said: “We are excited about the convergence of two major agricultural role-players, working towards the same goal of promoting the image of agriculture and enticing the consumer with a variety of locally produced agricultural products.

“Agri-Expo serves to initiate and facilitate opportunities for the promotion of agriculture and the continuously popular SA Cheese Festival presents the ideal platform for a unified celebration of the dairy industry.”

Tickets for the 16th SA Cheese Festival are available at Computicket, Shoprite and Checkers at R160 per person per day. No tickets will be sold at the gates. Festival times: 10:00 - 18:00. Sandringham is located next to the N1, Stellenbosch turn-off (exit 39), between Cape Town and Paarl.
